Moliterno

City of Moliterno (PZ)
Moliterno is a small town in Basilicata with nearly five thousand people, located about 200 km south of Naples. It was founded following the destruction of the ancient Roman city of Grumentum, which was invaded by the Saracens around the year 1000. The people of Grumentum who managed to escape the massacre fled to a hill where the Lombards, the first non-Italic people to occupy the territory, had erected a watchtower. The very name of the town comes from this tower and tells its story: Moles Aeterna. At the beginning of the millennium, the town was dominated by the Normans who built the medieval castle around the tower, later declared a national monument of interest.

The manor, which offers an extraordinary view of much of the Agri Valley, is a tourist attraction. Of significant artistic value are the Mother Church dedicated to the Madonna dell’Assunta, built between the 12th and 13th centuries; the Church of the Rosary with its Dominican cloister from the 1500s; and the Church of Santa Croce from the 1600s. This heritage testifies to the richness and culture of a people that boasts illustrious men, especially in the nineteenth century, writers, journalists, and politicians, who have all left considerable traces in the history of Italy.

Even today, the town of Moliterno is culturally very vibrant, thanks to the presence of Higher Education Institutes and the contribution of many youth associations. Among these, the Folk Group “O Cirnicchiu” plays a decisive role, as for almost sixty years it has been committed to the safeguarding, conservation, and promotion of the important popular and peasant traditions that have marked the history of the town.

The rich gastronomic memory is significant, with its simple and natural flavors that recall millennial traditions. These are annually renewed and celebrated in the “Sagra del Canestrato di Moliterno,” the highly prized sheep-goat cheese that has obtained the PGI for its quality and aging technique.
